about

Not a lot of left wing voices in country music, but Steve Earle has always been a bit different. He's written a ton of great political music, but it's his early stuff that still sticks for me. When I was a kid, my mom found my dad a jukebox, a big old heavy beast of a thing, and put it in the basement. My friends would come over and we would listen to the jukebox but there were only about 50 songs in there and we got pretty sick of them. Never got sick of this one.

lyrics

I was born by the railroad tracks. Train whistle wailed and I wailed right back. Papa left mama when I was quite young, he said "one of these days you're gonna follow me son." I ain't ever satisfied. Well I had me a women she was my world. But I ran off with a backstreet girl. My woman could not be true. Left me standing on a boulevard thinking about you. I ain't ever satisfied. Well I dreamt I made it to the Promised Land. I was standing at the gate I had the key in my hand. Saint Peter said "come on in, boy, you're finally home." I said, "no thanks Pete I'll just be moving along." I ain't ever satisfied.
